Low masts can pose a greater health risk as they beam straight into people’s homes, as is the case with the MTN mast in the Strawberry Lane area, according to engineer readings.

In SA, masts under 15m in height no longer require an Environmental Impact Assessment or approval by immediate neighbours.

However, once installed, the operators are legally obliged to co-locate with other service providers and may then raise the mast 20m – again without an EIA or approval by neighbours.
