Labelling mast objectors as hypocrites has been an effective form of silencing up until now, especially since those who choose to responsibly use cabled solutions where possible are stigmatised. We live in a society where people are dependent on packaging, water, electricity, cars and cellphones but are starting to explore ways to reduce the impact on the environment. This is as a result of education about reducing carbon footprint – from shopping with reusable bags, saving water & electricity, carpooling etc. So too there also needs to be education about the appropriate and responsible use of wireless technology. Reducing our EMR footprint.

The problem with over-use of wireless technology has been fuelled by a multi-trillion-dollar-a-year industry which has actively targeted children and teens and stigmatised those who don’t join the trend. Michael Repacholi  (former Chairman of WHO’s EMF project and co-founder of ICNIRP whose policy guidelines were adopted by SA) has much to answer for. Although fully aware that children, the elderly and sick are more at risk he has actively fuelled the marketing trend targeting young people and at a GSMA industry conference in 2012 he urged parents to get their children using wireless devices so that they won’t be left behind. Fear of being left behind or stigmatised is an integral part of the problem.
